 User Account Classifications, Policies & Guidelines

All users requesting an account on the Department of Chemistry servers will be categorized as one of the following account types:

Faculty Person appointed to teach and/or research in or for the department
Staff Employee working in or for the department in support roles
Student Degree-seeking graduate student
Postdoc Degree-receiving graduated student continuing research or work with the department
Guest Person not officially associated with the department, but in in need of temporary access to our IT services

  • Any account not categorized as Faculty, Staff, Student, or PostDoc will be considered a Guest account which will require sponsorship from an active Faculty member or the Department administration.
  • Account sponsors will have shared responsiblity in the use or misuse of the accounts that they sponsor.
  • Sponsorship of a non-Faculty, Staff, or Student account will need to be renewed on a 6-month basis by submitting the Account Sponsorship Application to the IT Shop staff. All non-renewed, sponsored accounts will be locked.
  • Upon departure from the Department in good standing, all Faculty, Staff, Student or PostDocs will be given the opportunity to have their accounts open for up to 3 months in order to archive account data and/or establish a new e-mail account elsewhere. After 3 months, their account will be classified as type "guest" and they will need to seek sponsorship in order to keep their account active.
  • Sponsored Guest accounts are only provided for those who's use of our IT resources provide some service or benefit to our Department or will be used in a continued collaborative effort.
